Roots of Empathy

Bruce Middle School will once again participate in Roots of Empathy.  This program focuses on identifying student’s own feelings and focusing on the cues to read the feelings of others.  This year, we welcome Baby Brodie (who also happens to be Mrs. Sparrow’s nephew!) and his mother, Michelle to Bruce.  Once a month, Brodie and Michelle will visit the students of Bruce, focusing on a grade seven classroom.  During these visits, students learn to engage with a small child, documenting growth, learning about child development and gaining empathy. We are excited to see the changes in baby Brodie throughout the year!

Koats for Kids

Koats for Kids is a seasonal program that runs September through January, helping clothe families with warm winter items.  Bruce Middle School will be accepting donations for winter coats, hats, boots, scarves and ski pants anytime from now until January to help out in this effort.  If you know of a family who would benefit from the Koats for Kids program, please encourage them to contact Mrs. Sparrow or email Koats for Kids at koats@UnitedWayWinnipeg.mb.ca  

We Day

25 lucky students from the Bruce Middle School citizenship team will be at the MTS Centre on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 for Winnipeg’s third annual We Day!  We Day is a day-long event of speakers and performers with the goal being to help ignite long term social action in youth.  Young people from across North America join together to celebrate positive actions and build momentum to make a difference in communities around the world.  The students on the citizenship team will be bringing initiatives to our student body throughout the school year.   Stay tuned to see how you can get involved and make a difference within our community this year!   To learn more about We Day, please visit

Winnipeg Block Parent Program


The National Block Parent Program underwent a full review by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in late 2006.

From the R.C.M.P. findings, "the policies and procedures established for the operation of the Block Parent Program are sound."
